Social media statement

Âmago — Energia Inteligente is not on social media. This is a conscious decision. It stems from the same values that guide our work: efficiency, sustainability and responsibility towards society.

Why we made this decision

Algorithms are not neutral. The big social platforms are designed to maximise usage time, engagement and revenue. To do so, their algorithms tend to favour content that provokes strong reactions, such as outrage, fear or polarisation, at the expense of accurate and balanced information. We do not want to feed that model.

Democracy deserves protection. The Cambridge Analytica case and others have shown how the data of millions of users was collected without proper consent and used for political targeting. We believe that companies also bear responsibility for the spaces they legitimise with their presence.

Privacy is a right. The business model of social media rests on the mass collection of personal data. We do not want to expose our clients, partners or employees to that circuit.

The impact on mental health is real. There is growing evidence of the harm done by intensive use of social media, especially among young people: anxiety, addiction and constant social comparison that lead to self-harm and suicide.

We believe we can be happier and better human beings without social networks that create private multi-billionaires with an enormous concentration of power and no oversight whatsoever. Their business model would have to change radically, to paid subscriptions rather than advertising and fake news.

Digital has an environmental footprint too. Every autoplaying video, every infinite scroll, uses energy in data centres all over the world. As a company dedicated to energy efficiency, we prefer digital communication that is sober and has a purpose.

Why LinkedIn

We keep a presence on LinkedIn because it is a professional platform, geared towards the sector, technical exchange and contact between companies. We recognise that it is not beyond criticism. We use it in moderation, solely for institutional and professional communication.

We believe that social networks, in their current form, are a bad influence on society. They degrade public debate, exploit people’s attention and put profit above collective well-being. In our view, they should simply be abolished.

Until that happens, we are doing our part: we do not feed them with our presence, our content or our clients’ data.
